As a dog owner and resident in a neighborhood with many other dogs I am familiar with barking dog issues.
First I'd like to say, dogs will bark even when their owners try to keep them from doing so.
Responsible owners try to keep their dog(s) from bothering others, especially after 10 pm.
If my dogs were bothering one of my neighbors I would hope they would let me know so I can do more to keep my animals from being a bother to others. (Just as I would if my kids were doing something to bother my neighbors.)
However, with all the dogs in the neighborhood it's not always easy to know which dog(s) you are hearing (unless you are going to walk the neighborhood to figure it out). Last year we had an issue with a late night barking dog in the neighborhood. Initially we thought it was our across-the-street neighbor's dog but it turned out the be a dog on the next block. (That street sits higher than ours so the noise carried farther.)
Peter your reply does not make sense. Babies do cry and good parents (hopefully) attend to Him/Her and try to resolve the crying to the best of their ability. Eventually the baby stops. Most of the time a neighbor can not hear a crying baby anyway, and for sure the baby should not be outside by the neighbors fence ALL DAY crying. A dog, especially the little ones bark all day when no one is home and they are left outside. That is irritating and inconsiderate.
What about birds that cherp all day? No one complains about that. That is because it is a beautiful sound. It is the annoying screaching, constant barking that other neightbors and home owners should not have to put up with. I have had dogs and trained them not to bark except at strangers at the door. If outside and I hear my dog barking, I immediatly attend to the dog and bring it in the house.
I currently have three neighbors, one next door, one behind me, and one behind me next to the other one that have dogs and two of the neighbors control their dogs barking. The one next to me could care less and this little ankle biter barks ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT. The neighbor will do nothing about it. Animal Control will come out and warn them and after three times, a complaint is signed and we go to court for disturbing the peace. The judge will warn the owners if it happens again, a fine will be issued. Third time, Animal Control takes the dog. I have had to do this only once. So comparing a babies crying a few minutes/hours here and there to a 24/7 barking dog does not make sense.
I agree with JMB's reply. People have the right to own pets and have children. Racing cars and motor cycles, planes, siren's, etc all make loud irritating sounds. But again, not 24/7. There are barking animal laws and I hate to see a loved animal taken away from it's owner for barking all the time, but I have a right when I bought my home to have somewhat peace and quit.
Peter, did you ever have children or see children in a restraunt screaming and crying and the parents do nothing about it? Does that bother you? Look around the restraunt and see the many faces of others who would like to give it to the parents because it is disturbing their meal. Does that ever happen to you? Do you get irritated?
So getting back to your GEESH, look around you and see what bother's you and compair it to the baby who cries. For All of us who read this reply, I am not trying to attack Peter for his charactor, but for the comparison used to explain away the "no big deal about barking dog's".
Noise is noise and a barking dog all day with no concern that the neighbors have to control it is just plain wrong and should be reported to Animal Control or after 10:00pm, to Simi Police for disturbing the peace. We who wish to watch TV, have friends over, of just sleep for work the next day deserve to have peace and should do all the legal things you can to resolve it. Maybe then there won't be a need for a DOG BARKING FORUM. Best of wishes to all
The comments following the article really show how heated this issue is.
on a side note:
Anyone have recommendations for dog obedience training in Simi?
I know there are plenty of services out there, I see them advertised in the vets office and at pet stores but have not personally spoken to anyone who has attended any of these classes.
To JmB and others interested in another counsel dog barking meeting.
I just found out today 6/4 that Simi City Hall is having another Public meeting on dog barking laws and inforcement with the new Animal Reg officers.
This meeting is scheduled for today Thur 6/4 from 3:00-4:00pm.
Sorry about last minute notice but I just found out my self today at 11:00am.
This is where Simi barking dogs will be heard by the right people and hopefully we all can get together on this today. Sorry dog lovers, it's not about the love for a dog, it's about the dog owners who have no consideration for their neighbors in leaving their loving pet outside all day without training them properly. A silent dog is more deadly then a noisy one. If I was an intruder climbing someones yard or fence, I don't think after the first bark I would continue, but a dog-in-wait will take care of the intruder, thus saving other homes from burglers and intruders. Those of you who have kids, do you remember the first child not sleeping at night. Bottle feeding and diaper changing all night and then having to work the next day. Remember how you felt then, "if only he/she would stop crying"., that is the message people. See you at the meeting. SP
